Stepping into the Story (Enrichment Activities)for An Old Fashion Girl

Stepping into the Story (Enrichment Activities)for An Old Fashion Girl

Created by Jennifer Elizabeth Walton

Real time application can take a teaching and turn it into a lesson learned, or take a principle and turn it into a tangible experience and reality. Activities help to bring the story and it’s principles to life as we experience things that the characters experienced. As well as, help us to have a positive attitude about what we are learning by making it fun.

Here are some suggestions of activities inspired by An Old-Fashioned Girl, that your Princess Circle may enjoy doing. There are/ may also be some suggested *links to online resources:

Polly / Old-Fashioned Exercise:

Polly’s life was full of active things to do which kept her healthy and strong. Try one (or more) of the many things that Polly said she enjoyed doing:

Sledding (coasting)

Running

Horse Riding

Boat rowing

Jumping rope

Raking hay[or leaves]

Gardening

A Dance:

Hold your own dance with good old-fashioned values and activities. Try holding Polly’s kind of dance: a country dance with square dancing, lively country classic music and all.

A Walk in the Park:

Throughout the book Polly takes many walks through the park and else where. She walked Mr. Shaw to work in the morning and home again in the evening. Mr. Sydney met up with her many times on walks when he was courting/ getting to know her.

Go for a walk with you daughter and talk about your courtship story, and of your daughters friends, especially guy friends. Talk about relationships and any questions, concerns, wisdom, standards, etc. that you want or should talk about.

Visit the Elderly / a Grandparent:

Visit your own grandparents, or if you can’t, then visit an elderly person from your neighborhood or at a retirement home. Ask them about their childhood and how the world has changed since then.

Home Making:

When Polly taught music lessons, she lived in an apartment by herself so she could be independent. She had to budget, shop, cook, clean, do the laundry and the mending, decorate, and be the hostess by herself. And she did a very good job.

Mothers have whole homes that they are the home makers for, and daughters have at least their own room to “make” and can learn to help their mothers with the rest of the house in preparation for their future homes.

Learn the home making art / skills, apply them, and share your accomplishment. Home making is a sacred duty and calling to make homes that are refuges from the world and a place where there is love, joy, and righteousness.
